Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden

Dr Merina Ahmed is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of lung, lymphoma and skin cancers. She has both a private and an NHS practice at The Royal Marsden.

She qualified at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, Imperial College London, and has been at The Royal Marsden since 2003. She undertook a period of research between 2007 and 2009 at The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research in head and neck cancer. Her MD focused on improving radiotherapy planning with improved imaging techniques and IMRT. She also led the development of novel targeted therapies in the thyroid unit. Her MD was awarded in 2010 and she was subsequently appointed as Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden and St George''s Hospital.

Her current practice involves treatment of patients with early and advanced stages of lung cancer, radiotherapy treatment for haematological malignancies (lymphoma, myeloma and leukaemia) and non-melanoma skin cancers. She has developed expertise in stereotactic radiotherapy and CyberKnife radiotherapy treatments for lung cancer, lung metastases and other sites of oligometastatic disease.

Stereotactic / CyberKnife radiotherapy forms a key part of her research programme. Other predominant research interests involve functional imaging for lung cancer and its utilisation for radiotherapy treatment, and the integration of novel biological therapies into radiotherapy treatment for lung cancer.

She has also applied these interests to lymphoma and has a sub-specialist interest in head and neck lymphoma.
