Jamie Rae

Throat Cancer Foundation

In 2010, successful businessman Jamie Rae was diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Whilst on his cancer journey he was alarmed and concerned by the lack of information about the causes, treatment and prevention of all throat cancers and was driven to set up the charity The Throat Cancer Foundation two years later.

He then focused on bringing to public consciousness the impact and contribution that HPV has to cancer and that there was also an urgent need for boys to be vaccinated against it to afford them the same level of protection already given to girls since 2008.

In 2013 he was one of two founder members of an organisation called HPV Action, whose aim was to achieve gender-neutral vaccination in the UK. The group has now grown to over 50 national health bodies and recognised as a very powerful lobbying body for HPV vaccination.

The Throat Cancer Foundation; how we changed a government’s mind

In February 2018 the Throat Cancer Foundation spearheaded a legal challenge and led a campaign against the UK government to get boys vaccinated against HPV. As of July 2018, the fight was won.

Jamie will tell of the journey he and the charity undertook to bring about change on a massive public health issue, raising awareness along the way of HPV related cancers by forming a major UK lobbying body.

Jamie Rae will be speaking in the following theatre:
